LOADING A CONTAINER FOR CAMEROON
LOADING A CONTAINER FOR CAMEROON
Each year, AFRIQUE FUTURE FRANCE sends 2 to 4 containers to Cameroon according to the needs expressed by Father Emmanuel. After consulting the heads of the hospital services as well as the teachers, he forwards the list of medical, school, administrative or other material necessary for the functioning of our structures. Françoise and Bernadette move heaven and earth to find new or second-hand equipment in very good condition, at the best price, for our hospitals and schools. At the time of loading, the remaining space in the container is optimally filled with everything that the German and Alsatian volunteers have collected and prepared during the previous months.
On 24 February 2022, a new container was loaded near Mulhouse. Portmann Transport Company had very generously accepted to receive and store our goods for several weeks (depending on their delivery) in their main warehouse. Michel and Yves added the items that had been accumulated by AF members.
The entire load consisted of two electric generators, each weighing 700 kg, an anaesthesia machine, a photocopier, about 120 cardboard boxes of brand new equipment (ultrasound probes, electric scalpels, patient monitors, oxygen concentrators, blood pressure monitors, toners, etc.) or recovered second hand items (books, notebooks, educational games, etc.), bags of clothing and plush toys, many chairs and tables offered by the schools of Hegenheim and Schopfheim, computers, mechanical sewing machines, etc.
On the appointed date, eight volunteers from Germany (Theresia, Manfred, Werner and Simon) and Alsace (Françoise, Anita, Michel and Sylvie) spent the day loading a 60 m3 container, following, as far as possible, the loading plan prepared by Michel. At 5pm, once the seals were in place, the driver set off for Strasbourg, then continued to the port of Antwerp where the container was loaded onto a ship. On 4 March, the container set off on a month-long journey to the port of Kribi in Cameroon.
Michel and Yves collect the donations collected by the members of AFRIQUE FUTURE and bring them to the Portmann warehouse in Illzach
On D-Day, the volunteers get busy in the early hours of the morning…
Chairs and tables are stacked in a clever balance
Installing each object in such a way as to optimise the available volume is THE challenge of the day. Anita leads the operations
Everyone holds their breath as the two electric generators are loaded.
Michel has mapped the exact location of the two heavy devices. Guided by Michel and Manfred, a friendly Portmann employee installs them in the right place successfully.
A well-deserved break!
A few more hours of hard work …
… before loading is completed. All are tired but satisfied
